SARAH POLAND – The Intimacy Of Liminal Spaces

5th to 28th November 2016

Sarah Poland moved from Cornwall to Wales in 2011 shortly after her last one-person exhibition with the gallery in 2010. Part of the artist’s time was spent living off-grid in an Oak woodland. The works selected for this exhibition include drawings, prints and paintings all of which relate in one way or another to the natural environment experienced during this period by the artist. It is interesting to see how the change in surroundings, together with an intensive period of study at Aberystwyth School of Art, has effected the artist’s working methods.

MFA exhibition Aberystwyth School of Art – in the exhibition space

.

Trying to decide which paintings to put in and in which order.

It is as much about the space as it is the paintings, not simply a matter of putting in the favourites.

MFA exhibition Aberystwyth School of Art – preparing to hang

Next up is my final exhibition Aberystwyth School of Art to complete my Masters.

Having been working remotely, I’ve now trucked the work up there and have finally been able to spread it out and stand back. Now I’ve got some space now to allocate titles and to decide which combination works best in  the space allotted to me.

Catalogue Artist Statement

One of the things that makes painting distinctive is how the perception of time is evaluated: its histories can be visible and at the same time all are firmly in the present. In painting I want something of the immediacy  of drawing: its explosiveness, brevity, rawness and also a type of mark-making that is not consciously directed and informs both the beginning and the final stages of making an image.

We share a liminal existence: occupying a position at, or on both sides of a boundary or threshold. Experiences offer many thresholds between the physical and transcendental, thought and realisation, present, future, past.

Nature can give us moments of poetic experience.  I seek to explore the possibilities and impossibilities of expressing these liminal moments in paint.

V & A Prints Collections

.

Aberystwyth : Paper Press Print has been accepted into the print collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

It has also been accepted into the University of Wales Art Collections where research is an important aspect of their activities, with emphasis particularly upon the history of graphic art, the development of new processes in etching, lithography and relief printing. The University of Wales Collection currently has an archive of over 10,000 prints, drawings and photographs and the galleries regularly host both touring and in-house curated shows of historical and contemporary prints by leading practitioners of national and international repute.

This is very exciting and prestigious and allows me to now have the heading of ‘Public Collections‘ on my artist’s biography.

.

I wrote about the portfolio in a previous post outlining,  ‘On his web-site Paul describes it as ‘a portfolio celebrating the diversity of printmaking from traditional to digital. Each of the 30 professional artists, staff and students participating in this project have had contact with the print studio at The School of Art Aberystwyth between 2000-2012. Artists have been encouraged to be experimental and processes include combination of print media, traditional and digital processes, hybrid prints as well as more inter-disciplinary activity such as prints developing from photography, film and video. Artists were also asked to reflect upon their own practice and to produce a print that is representative of their current work’.’

Collaborations: Aberystwyth Paper Press Print

.
I haven’t posted for a while and so some posts will be a little belated and there may be a few running one after the other. I have been otherwise busy, having a baby! 🙂
.
An exciting project and something which I am very proud to take part in is  Collaborations: Aberystwyth Paper Press Print.  It is a portfolio which has been put together by Master Printer Paul Croft TMP (Albuquerque) RE and was completed at the end of last year.
On his web-site Paul describes it as ‘a portfolio celebrating the diversity of printmaking from traditional to digital. Each of the 30 professional artists, staff and students participating in this project have had contact with the print studio at The School of Art Aberystwyth between 2000-2012.
